Folding is an everyday practice in Japan, where from familiarity is born innovation, experimentation and a finely honed craft. Highly structured yet perfectly organic, a fold can be at once bravely minimal and breathtakingly sophisticated.
Artist Yuko Nishimura fuses origami and origata in her art, featured here in Paperblanks' Ori series.
In her relief works, Ms. Nishimura's folded curves and straight lines suggest formal structure and the creative impulse. Repetition creates patterns and symmetry which in turn bring aesthetic and emotional pleasure to the viewer. These exquisite pieces celebrate the ties between art, culture and everyday life in Japan. From the simple fold we are reminded of the unending story of human ingenuity.

Photos do not do it justice

This notebook fits in your back pocket (even if you are boney) and it is rugged. Which is good, but more importantly, it is gorgeous! Why does the description not say that cover is textured to match the design? It’s a 3-D design! Rub you fingernail over it and it sounds like rumble strips on a highway. AND the coloring is not just metallic — it also has iridescent hues. So, when you tilt it the colors change. No one will see this and not say, “Wow!” Or “Ooo, cool.” YOU must learn to say, “Don’t touch it. It’s mine.”

I have a super wet writing vintage Waterman 58 super flex pen and I can write in this notebook with that beast and there is no bleed through to the other side of the page, no feathering (ink seeping along paper fibers)... not even shadowing on the other page. This pen leaves a visible THICKNESS of ink, but this paper says, “Yeah. OK. Fine. What else do ya wanna write?”

This is my 5th or 6th “Ori” series notebook from Paperblank. I love them. This is my second most favorite of the series. My most favorite is “Dune,” but is ALWAYS sold out.
